Schiphol welcomes around 55 million passengers every year. To make their waiting time as pleasant as possible, shopping plays an important role. All these shops are located behind secured areas and are only accessible to staff with the correct key. This makes access for employees more complex – especially when both speed and security are essential.
With dozens of shops and hundreds of keys, effective key management is indispensable. When keys are missing or cannot be found, risks quickly arise:
Schiphol encountered this challenge and found the solution in our electronic key cabinet: the KeyConductor.
Between 1999 and 2013, the Airport Retailers Association (ARA) worked with two outdated systems. These relied on chip cards that were sensitive to dirt. They were slow, prone to errors, and the systems did not communicate properly with each other. In addition, it was often unclear who had which key. Retailers lost valuable time and administrators lost oversight.
For ARA, the conclusion was clear: a new, reliable solution was needed.
Together with ARA, we developed a smart solution for Schiphol. Two KeyConductors with large touchscreens have been installed at the airport. Staff open the cabinet using their own pass or a code. Inside the cabinet, each key is fitted with a KeyCop using UHF RFID technology. This allows the system to register instantly which key is taken or returned.
Administrators monitor everything via a central dashboard. At a glance, they can see who has which key and when it has been returned. Reports are available immediately, keeping key management clear and straightforward.

No more waiting times for staff
Fewer questions for the help desk
Shops can open on time, without key-related hassle
Always a real-time overview of key usage
Better security during daily operations
The transition to KeyConductor went smoothly and without issues. The software had been configured weeks in advance, allowing for rapid implementation: within 24 hours, the old systems were replaced and the new key cabinets were ready for use.
“Since switching to KeyConductor, we can now collect and return keys quickly and without errors. The system works safely, reliably, and exactly as promised.”
– Theo Goldberg, director ARA
